dr521 asked Swimming pool leak or evaporation?

My pool had lost about 2 inches of water every 24 hours for at least a few weeks. Then, over a week-long peirod, a couple of days of which were near 100 F, the pool lost only about 1/4 inch. Then, after the weather cooled to 70 F, water level started dropping by 2 inches per day again. Any idea on what's going on? Scubabob, it's an in-ground, vinyl-lined pool. I did the bucket test last night, although I did not plug up all the holes. I'm in California, and we don't winterize, so may be tonight I will turn off the filter timer (I have it set to run at night) and see what happens. I left the filter off last night, and lost no water. It thus looks as though I have a leak in the plumbing... Scubabob, actually, the bucket test showed that loss of pool water was greater than the loss of bucket water. So I left the pump off for a night, and lost no pool water. (I don't have winterizing plugs, so I did not use them.) Based on these results, though, is it safe to assume that the leak is in the plumbing?

And got the following answer:

Okies... even if the pool temp was 90 F and air at 50 F, there's no way you'de get a 2 inch loss due to evaporation alone. You have a leak. Now to find it. It's going to be in the lines or in the pool. There's a simple test to rule out things and it will even help you rule out evaporation at the same time. It's called the bucket test. You don't mention if this is an inground, above ground or even if it's a concrete or vinyl pool, all of which would help a lot. So I'll assume this is an inground and go no further. Get a plastic pail, put a nice round stone or other non sharp weight in it, place it on your pool steps in the water so that it's not submerged totally. Fill it with pool water so that it is the same level as the pool when measured on the side of the pail. Turn off your pump and plug all returns, in wall suctions and skimmers with your winterizing plugs.Leave it for 24 hours. If the water in the pool is lower than that of the pail, then the leak is in the pool itself. It's not evaporation and not a leak in your lines. If the level is the same you've got a leak in a line. The rate of loss you're talking about and the strange nature, well, isn't really strange. A skimmer line can do this. What happens is this. The ground around the leak gets saturated after losing all that water. It can actually form a mud patch on the leak. It's sucking that mud patch onto itself. Suddenly you have no leak. Then something changes, like turning off the pump( like on a timer or manually), then that patch blows off as there's no longer any suction holding it and you're leak is back until the ground gets saturated again. I've seen it a number of times and it's almost always at the 90 elbow under the skimmer, especially if the pool is about 15 years old. They used nylon insert fittings back then (white) , not grey poly and they never figured they's degrade with chlorine exposure. Well...they do Most line leaks of that era pool are almost always a nylon fitting..In any event, if it turns out to be a line, after the test, you're best to get in a pro. We can find plumbing leaks under 6 inches of concrete and 4 feet down to within about 6 inches of the location in under half an hour. in any line. The fix , if it is that 90, will take about 3 hours including concrete cuts and re pouring crete over it. Budget about 250 bucks thereabouts, less if there's no crete to deal with. There is one other oddball leak like this that's rare but happens. You didn't say if this was a vinyl pool with an aqua lamp light system, but if it is, it's also possible that a syphon was initiated in the electrical conduit from the light niche. If the water level is over filled somewhat in the pool and the conduit was laid too low under the deck, it can start a syphon. It's going to be 1 inch pipe there and could drain it 2 inches in 24 hours. It would stop when the pool level got lower than the end of the conduit. It's rare, but I've dealt with no less than 4 of this type of "leak". The solution is to find the conduit end and put on more pipe to bring it farther above the pool water level. To check, imagine a straight line back from the light to the outer deck edge and look for settling or mushiness in the ground 2 feet on either side of that point. I'll keep this on my watch list if you post additional details. Edit: Ok, so no water loss with the bucket test and according to that last detail you left, did you then have plugs for your lines? If so, then yep, your leak is in the lines. Normally a 2 inch leak, I would be inclined to immediately lean to the return lines, but due to the intermittent way it was leaking, that just never happens. I't always a steady leak, that if anything, gets worse, never better as it's under pressure. One last thing. If this is a sand filtered pool, your backwash line....is it one of those flexible one's you roll out, or is it permanently buried and you can't see the end of it? If it's a flex hose, ignore this, but if it's buried, find the end and with the pump running a couple hours, check it. If there's a good deal of water there then it's the filter itself that has the issue, namely the multiport and insdie it, the keystem and or the keystem gasket.. Just a last minute thought, as that is possibe, given the information and one other avenue to explore, especially seeing as it is cheaper to fix than the leaky line possibility and we always try to troubleshoot from cheapest to costliest before we drop the customer's dime. That can be fixed by the homwowner. Edit: Yep, it's plumbing based. With what you've told me, I'd be looking at the return lines or fittings. You can definitely rule out a hole in the liner and rule out a leaking skimmer line. A leaking skimmer, doing it the way you did, would actually increase leaking when the system is off and not plugged. It didn't. A leaking liner, would have leaked at the same rate, no matter what you did. This is why I like the bucket test 🙂 Cheap and rules stuff out. You can keep your pool running , temporarily, until it's repaired by running an over deck line, if that's feasible, given the distance between the filter and pool. You'd need to toss a plug in each return and hook that line up to the "out" on your equipment. It'll stop your pool gong to hell until it's repaired and stop your loss. I've used customer's vac hoses for that, if they were in good shape. Up to you if you want to tackle something like that. It all depends on how fast you can get someone in to localize where in that return it's leaking. Letting it sit for more than a week is never good. Fittings usually let go before pipe does. It'll either be right behind the wall at the return. At the T where both returns come together or under the pad. That T will be on the corner of the pool , between both returns, that's closest to the equipment. Pool guys are lazy, we hate digging and that's the most direct route. It should come up to about 18 inches from the surface there. Imagine a straight line from there to your equipment and , barring any obstacles when they built it, that will be the plumbing run, more or less. That's one place, as a homeowner you can check if they tied it together near the edge of the original excavation, look for settling or greener grass. If they did it in tight to the wall, you're out of luck. and it's pro time. The water won't show down there and the drainage they put in would take it away. The rest is going to be either too deep or under concrete. The only place they'll be deep , is if the builder went straight down from the wall fitting and did another 90 and ran it along the bottom of the deck supports at the wall base (48 inches). Hope he didn't do that as the supports themselves could have sliced the line and that will be a horor show for the poor guy that reapirs it. I know, done a couple. In any event, get a pro in . You've just cut about 50 bucks off your bill by doing what you have. He'll be able to find it faster, without wasting any time.
