Kieran Berton asked What is the difference between volume and gain?
I am a pianist of 10 years, and have recently started using electric pianos on gigs and rehearsals with my jazz band, and in using different amps, speakers, and sound boards, I have come across many different setups involving gain and volume controlled by two different switches, but have yet to understand the difference between two. The closest I have gotten is the explanation, "gain controls how much is pulled in, volume controls how much goes out." I am having difficulty understanding this. It also seems that having too much volume and not much gain makes the sound very distorted, and I am interested in knowing why that is. Thank you in advance for any help you might have or feel like sharing.
And got the following answer:
Your explanation of "gain controls how much is pulled in, volume controls how much goes out" is actually not that far off. Gain is actually a misnomer...that control should be labelled "Sensitivity" to be electrically correct. But apparently "gain" scored higher in marketing surveys...so we're stuck with it. And to further confuse the issue, there is no standard terminology between amp manufacturers. Different amp manufacturers can call the same function different things. What might be "volume" on one amp may be called "Master" on another...yet perform exactly the same function. OK...so what do they do? To fully grasp that, you need to have a very basic understanding of how an amp is put together. Again, this is going to vary from model to model, but at it's most basic an instrument amp block diagram would look like this: INPUT--->Buffer--->GAIN Control--->Preamp--->Tone Controls--->Effects--->VOLUME--->Power Amp--->Speakers When guitarists started experimenting with distorting their amps in the 60's there were no gain controls. You just had to turn the whole thing up...and if you had a 100 watt Marshall you're talking loud enough to neuter a rhino at 10 yards. Somewhere along the way, someone figured out that you could generate a bunch of distortion in the preamp section of the amp, and then use another control to regulate how much signal went to the power amp section. Thus, you could have a lot of distortion at a lower level. And thus was born the "gain" control. So, if you want a lot of distortion, then you turn up the gain and use the volume/master to set up how loud the amp is. But, in your case it sounds like this is not what you want. So, for the cleanest sound you want to turn the volume/master up and then set your loudness with the gain control. Now, keep in mind that if you're using a guitar amp (which if it has "gain" control on it, it likely is), it was not designed for keyboards. And depending on the amp, it may not get completely clean. The other problem is that keyboards put out a much stronger signal than the typical electric guitar. That creates additional problems because you're just hitting the preamp even harder, which makes it distort more. If you have to use an instrument amp, keep the volume on your keyboard down. And if you have a choice, a bass amp would be a better choice than a guitar amp. Bass amps are usually designed to be cleaner sounding. And if they have a high frequency horn in the speaker cabinet, it's going to make your keys sound even better. Sorry for the long explanation, but hopefully you have a better idea as to what's going on now. Good luck. Greetings from Austin, Tx Ken
