I have to make a movies about either Electricity or Energy. I really do not know how to make a movie about one of these. I have 4 other kids to help me. I have to act something out about it. Im 14 so it cant be like little kid things. I also have to have it done in 2 months. Any help?
And got the following answer:
Hey J-man, I've been teaching solar power classes in our local school here for years. It is fun and exciting to see the kids reactions when we actually make solar power from a panel in the room, but the parts for that are expensive and you have to know how to operate them. What I have found that people have questions about over the years is how much power it takes to run something. Usually it's a flat screen TV, or a freezer or digital clock, something fairly simple, but the answer is always a mystery. Well here is an idea to make a movie answering those questions. Besides your movie making equipment, such as a video camera and visual aids, the only other things you will need is a device called a, Kill-A-Watt meter, and some time. Google that name and you'll find lots of them for sale, some for as little as $20 USD. It looks like a lamp timer with a digital readout, just plug it into the wall, then plug any household electric appliance into it, and it tells you how much power the device is using, in watts. Then if you leave it on for a while, it will tell you how many Killowatthours (KWH) it has used since you plugged it in. If you ask your parents for one of their electric bills, you can find the amount they pay for each KWH of electricity, it is usually around 10 or 15 cents. Many homes use from 300 to over 1000 KWH's per month, so the cost can get pretty large. One thing I've heard people argue about for years is how much power something uses. You parents might say something like, "Turn that darn radio off, it's costing a fortune in electricity!" Well the truth might surprise them. The cool thing about this meter is it will tell you exactly how much something uses. Plug in your radio and run it for 8 hours one day, then read the digital readout, it might only use .2 KWH. You can convert that to dollars and cents by multiplying it by the cost on the bill. As an example, if your parents pay 15 cents per KWH, and your radio uses .2 all day, then .15 X .2 comes to 3 cents. Now try plugging the refrigerator into it for one day (exactly 24 hours). After your get your usage, multiply it by 30 for the number of days in the month, then times the cost per KWH. A large refrigerator might use 1 or 2 KWH per day, for a cost of maybe $5 each month, a lot more than your radio. Since you have the time, if you had the meter, you could have your partners start by filming you walking around the house looking at various things, like a radio, lamp, refrigerator, microwave and so on. Then tell them each to guess what each device uses per day in energy. Now film yourself plugging in the meter to each device for a day, keep a notebook with usage amounts for each device. Then work out the numbers from the cost in the electric bill, and show a grand total for how much each device costs at the end of a month. You could be your own Mythbusters Movie about energy use. Another thing to do is use two lamps that are identical, but one has a standard 40 watt bulb in it, the other a 15 watt compact flourescent bulb. Plug the meter into each one and run them for one hour. Notice that each lamp puts out the same amount of light, but the one with the new bulb uses one fourth the energy. You could even work out the cost of running each lamp for 3 hours each night, and calculate how much each one costs in electricity each month, then figure out how long it takes to earn back the cost of the new light bulb in electricity savings. If you can get the meter ordered, then you can start now by filming the introduction, with you or one of your partners walking around an ordinary home examining electrical devices and taking guesses at what it costs to operate them. Get your notebook ready, and then when the meter arrives, you'll be ready to take your readings on 8 or 9 things. One of my favorites is the old refrigerator people like to keep in the garage to keep ice tea cold. An old fridge in a hot garage is always the biggest energy user in the house, and with that meter, you can prove it. Some of the Kill A Watt models even have a feature that allows you to program in the cost per KWH for your electricity, then they can spit out the answer after 24 hours in dollars and cents. Just multiply this cost by 30 and you have your monthly cost for that device. Good luck J man, and take care, Rudydoo
