Angela asked I have moved into a house that has zero phone jacks. Can I install/rewire an electrical plug into a jack?
I know the house is wired for a land line, but either they were taken out or covered during a remodel. I've seen the products to have wireless phone jacks, but looks like you have to have at least one in the first place. Anyway I can do this without paying the phone company to come out and do it?
And got the following answer:
Please tell me what your house exactly has. Check outside. does it have a "telephone network interface"? it is plastic and grey in color. It is usually near the Electric Meter. Open it. Get any screwdriver...it should have a universal screw...you can also open it with pointy scissors. Look for four screws with wires connected to them. Are there at least two sets of wires? (one set that runs from the telephone cable and another set that runs into your house) Also look for wires surrounding the box. There should be a thick black cable that goes into the ground. And another wire that goes into the ground. (if it doesn't go in to the ground, perhaps it is connected to an antenna &/or satellite dish? lol? I have never seen landlines like that. Unlike CableTV and Internet, I have only seen landlines that go into the ground, no matter where you live) And...there should be wires that go into your house. If it does not have wiring that goes into your house, then your house doesn't even have any wiring for the jacks. If it does, there has to be another end to the wiring somewhere in the house...or perhaps under the house or outside of it. How do install jacks: purchase a spool of wire. I think it called Cat5 indoor outdoor cable. I am not sure but I got it at Radio Shack. also purchase jacks. you can get the usual external mount jacks, or you can get a flush mount jack. I recommend the flush mount jacks. They can fit into the wall just like electrical outlets and switches. I am not sure what you are talking about when you say you want to install/rewire an electrical plug into a jack. The wiring for electricity is completely different. But flushmount jacks do use the same types of boxes that the outlets and light switches use. get one of those also. And you will have to cut into your wall, drill a hole for the wire, hammer nails to the wood, etc. With a flushmount jack, you can get TWO outlets in one location. You can also install the flushmount jack into an external box, just like light switches, outlets, and even ethernet network drops use sometimes. With a flushmount jack, you can have the same kind of jacks that offices and businesses use. Or you can install a boring jack. The install is easier, but it is boring. Supplies you need: Screwdrivers Phone cable wire strippers scissors drill phone jack - recommend getting flushmount one...especially dual flushmount one. If you get the flushmount one, you will also need one electrical box for each one a saw-knife nails hammer you can also get phone jacks at radio shack... and you can get everything on ebay also. INSTRUCTIONS: go to your phone box. Open it. unscrew all the screws inside but DON'T take them off because it is not necessary. Get the wire stripper and strip the wiring. You can also gently use scissors to cut open and peel off the external wiring insulation. and use your wire stripper to take off some of the insulation in each of those little wires. Or you can use your teeth to gently take off the wiring insulation. Make sure all the exposed wires is twisted together. (don't twist them to each other lol) And then for each color, there should be a letter next to each of the screws. Put one wire where it needs to go. Y for yellow, W for white, G for green, R for red, for example. Wrap the wire around the screw. screw in all the screws. There should be a hole in the box. Thread the phone cable through the hole. Oh. and if your box has a set up for "Line 1" and "Line 2", make sure it is installed on Line 1. You can add a second line (two phone numbers) if you like. Just repeat the exact same steps. And if you want to have jacks in more than one room, you can install it the same way by getting a second phone cable. Install it into each phone line also if you are getting two numbers. drill a hole in your house. Make sure to drill the holes away from any electrical outlets. Put one wire in each room. Cut the wire with scissors if you have plenty of wire. Get the wire stipper and strip the wires and match the colors of the little wires to the letters next to the screws. If you have a dual flushmount jack, you will need to get a small wire, strip both ends, and connect the two jacks. Connect one of the jacks to the phone cable that goes to the box. Or you can run two wires to the same location. If you want both lines to go to the same dual jack, you can also get the cable from line 1 and connect it to one of the jacks, and get the cable from the line 2 and connect it to the other jack. The options are endless lol. I think you get the idea. Have a nice day. answer mine http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AstgujtaaWP96dts1yI43wvsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091214012244AANWTf6
